Why Is Sitting So Bad?

The more hours you spend sitting daily, the greater the risk of metabolic problems. It takes a heavy toll on your muscles, bones and joints to be in a sedentary position for extended periods of time. Especially if you tend to hunch over a desk, cross your legs in the same way, stare at a screen or tense your shoulders, it's likely that your posture will gradually lead towards chronic neck, back, hip and shoulder aches and pain.

If your bones and muscles are not lubricated through movement, resistance training and a nourishing diet, there is the risk of muscle wastage, a slowing metabolism that can’t burn calories efficiently, heart problems, circulation problems and osteoporosis.

Research has indicated that sitting for prolonged periods can also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. This includes sitting at a desk or driving. Studies have found that people who sit for over eight hours a day have the same risk of premature death posed by smoking and obesity. Analysis of data from over 1 million people concluded that an hour to 75 minutes of moderate exercise daily countered these risks.

Mental Wellness

Emotional wellness is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Mental and physical health go hand in hand.

Mental Wellness includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

Simple activities to support your mental well-being are recommended.  Mindfulness and deep breathing to centre your thoughts and alleviate stress or anxiety, help to promote wellness.
